Yep. Snow.
I have learned that tomatoes can survive snow. Thay can survive freezing rain. But, even covered, they cannot survive 18 degrees. Altough it was the 18 degrees that got them, at one point it got down to 6. Yes, you read that right. Six degrees above zero.
My tomatoes were so happy! I think it was about 72 degrees or so the day I planted them. I t was nearly two weeks past that magic "last forst" date, the coldest nightime temperature forcasted for the next two weeks was a chilly, but certainly manageable 35 degrees.
I was a little too irritated to restart anything for a few days. I briefly considered ripping out my garden and planting grass. Well, that was a bit extreme, to be sure. My tomatoes are restarted, as are my peppers. I lost about 2 1/2 months, but I certainly couldn't have predicted record low temperatures for 2 weeks straight if the national weather service didn't see it coming!
Well, that's enough of my sob story. Dearest Anthony tried to remind me that they are only plants after all!
